Valentine’s Day

13 Feb

I find it interesting that our society, largely encouraged by greeting card companies, finds particular “days” to commemorate the importance of relationships. Tomorrow, school children will hand out little “Valentines” to their classmates and Teachers, friends, lovers, spouses, sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, grandparents….all will hand “Valentine’s Day” cards or candy or other gifts to express their love to each other.

Choosing one day out of 365 to express one’s love to a person who is supposed to be a significant part of your life seems sort of stingy. There shouldn’t need to be an “occasion” to express love, or appreciation of someone in our life. We want to take each moment as it comes to let someone know that they are important to us, because we just don’t know whom we might see again, or not. Life isn’t predictable that way.

Granted, it’s fun to buy that “special gift” for someone special in our life and see the look on their face when they get it, or maybe just enjoy another’s company for dinner, or some time spent together. But that’s true on any day. I guess the point I’m getting at is the more we express love towards others, the more we’ll feel it within ourselves. If we find ways every day to let people know they are significant to us and we find ways to gift others with a kindness or attention, then we enrich our lives as well as theirs.

When we live each day as a new life, as a completion unto itself, as I have observed my spiritual mentor and Elder Grandmother Pa’Ris’Ha live, we must find time within that cycle to express our love to those who matter to us, and practice kindness to all others.             -Deborah Adler

Compassion and love are not a luxury. As the source both of inner and external peace, they are fundamental to the survival of our species. –Dalai Lama

Have a wonder-filled day and allow there to be much to be thankful for in your day. Touch others lives today in a service that will reward you and them in a good and helpful way. Harm no one and let truth be your solid ground. Create blessings in your life, live as God is! –Grandmother Pa’Ris’Ha *
